   Raichur was a part of the Hyderabad State till the re-organisation of State on 1st November 1956. It was in the princely state of Mysore during the rule of Tipu Sultan, later coming under the Kingdom of the Nizam. It is located 409 km from the state capital, Bangalore. From the context of enumeration of places in these inscriptions and other account of exploits of Vishnuvardhana, it becomes clear that the place referred to above as Rachavoor or Rachanoor is Raichur of the present days. Historical Rachoor or Rachooru underwent a further slight change in recent times with the addition of ya between Ra and cha to become the present Rayachooru (Ra+ya+cha+oor) . It has already yielded hundreds of inscriptions, ranging right from the Mauryan period upto the end of the Muslim period, in a variety of languages like Sanskrit, Prakrit, Kannada, Arabic and Persian and belonging to almost all the dynasties that ruled over the Dekkan.

Climate: Raichur climate remains almost dry throughout the year with mean monthly maximum temperature of 44.8o C in May and minimum of 16.6o C in December. The district receives very low and erratic precipitation with an average annual rainfall of 621 mm. Rivers: The only two rivers of importance in this district are the Krishna and the Tungabhadra which form the entire northern and southern boundaries of the district, respectively. Hutti gold mines: Hutti gold mines are located in Hutti around 80 km from Raichur city. Hutti Gold Mines Company LTD which runs the operations here was actually formed as Hyderabad Gold Mines Company Ltd by Nizam of Hyderabad. Raichur Thermal Power Station is situated about 20 km north of Raichur. There are 7 units of 210 MW capacity each. Raichur fort: According to inscriptions on wall, the fort was built by one Raja Vitthala by order of Raja Gore Gangayya Raddivaru, minister of the Kakatiya queen Rudramma Devi, in the year 1216. Ek-Minar-ki-Masjid: This is a mosque where the roof is supported by only one pillar. Ramagadde: Ramagadde is a beautiful island in the river Krishna located around 20 km from Raichur city. The Bala Hisar or citadel is built at the top of the hillock and commands a good view of the interior of the fort as well as of the surround country.
     People, Art and Culture :
   Raichur district has rich cultural traditions and has been playing an important role in the field of literary activities since early times. The temples and mathas were centers of cultural, literary and social activities. A galaxy of eminent personalities, who shone in the cultural field, hailed from this district. Rulers of powerful kingdoms like those of the Chalukyas and Rashtrakutas, of Viajayanagara and of the Bahmanis and Adil Shahs, which arose in the vicinity of the district, were great patrons of arts and letters. There were independent Bhakti movements pioneered by Sharanas and Haridasas who were dedicated souls and many of whom have left a deep impress on the literature and culture of the Kannada country.
